I filed for several patents in the mid-2000s (the first of which was granted in 2009), and in 2005, I started a company, Vortex Hydro Energy, with backing from the Office of Technology Transfer of the University of Michigan.Vortices created in flowing water can pull cylinders up and down with great force.VIVACE, ma non troppoOur principal invention was a hydrokinetic energy technology that we named the Vortex Induced Vibration for Aquatic Clean Energy converter (VIVACE). As we envision it, a system would consist of a three-dimensional array of long cylinders, each attached to an electrical or hydrolic power take-off system. Water flowing over the cylinders creates vortices that cause the cylinders to oscillate, and converts some of the horizontal hydrokinetic energy to mechanical energy. The attached power take-off system captures this energy and uses it to turn an electric generator.VIVACE provides many advant ages over conventional water-based power generation. The VIVACE converter doesnt need to impound water behind a dam to create a head. Water is allowed to flow freely over the cylinders. In contrast to hydrokinetic technologies the converter does not use a turbine, making it safer for aquatic life that swim past or through it. Equally important ocean currents and river flows are much more predictable and reliable than waves, wind, or solar activity. Moreover, VIVACE is scalable from low-watt through gigawatt-sized installations, where the science and engineering remain the same.VIVACE converters may be set up in any flowing water, including rivers and the undersides of semi-submersible ocean platforms.A Matter of DensityFor a given amount of infrastructure, VIVACE creates an amazing quantity of power. The comparison with wind power is illustrative as both methods capture power from a fluid. It becomes immediately apparent that wind begins with a disadvantage as, compared to flowing w ater, wind has a low power density. Since water is 830 times denser than air, the power density of a VIV-based device is significantly higher than for a wind turbine. Our experiments show that a VIVACE converter in water flowing at 1.3 meters per second has a power density of 185 watts per cubic meter, about 14,600 times greater than todays state-of-the-art wind farm.And unlike wind turbines, which require careful location to exploit favorable wind conditions and to avoid unfavorable interactions with humans and wildlife, a VIVACE converter can be placed in almost any type of free-flowing water. The water must be deep enough to permit the safe passage of boats, and to avoid interaction between the wake of the converter and both the surface and the riverbed or seafloor.Environmental and licensing issues must be worked out, as well as optimizing VIVACE, but we have no doubt that the converter can operate in real-life conditions as expected. Your employer cannot terminate you or threaten your job in any way during this time. Your employer may stay in contact with you during this time, but cannot ask you to conduct business or perform work tasks during an FMLA leave. According to the EEOC, if you are unable to perform your job due to a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth, your employer must treat you in the same way any other disabled employee is treated, therefore you may also qualify for short term disability benefits. Remember, an FMLA leave is approved by state and federal workplace laws, so if you are finding it difficult to get this processed in a timely or satisfactory manner, you may contact the US Department of Labor division for your state. (Part one of the article can be found here.). The whole thing is great but I particularly liked Lazlos observations on resumes, as he echoes what we preach. Prospective bosses today care less about what you know or where you learned it than what value you can create with what you know The key is to frame your strengths as: ‘I accomplished X, relative to Y, by doing Z.’ Most people would write a résumé like this: ‘Wrote editorials for The New York Times.’ Better would be to say: ‘Had 50 op-eds published compared to average of 6 by most op-ed [writers] as a result of providing deep insight into the following area for three years.’ Most people don’t put the right content on their résumés.” Google is known for its eccentric hiring practices but, in this, they are no different to any other company. Employers want specifics, because its the details that tell them exactly what youve achieved, and therefore what they can expect in the future. And think about Lazlos words: most people dont put the right content on their resumes. This gives you a HUGE opportunity, because if your resume starts with a powerful summary and contains action-packed and detailed bullet points, youll be head and shoulders above 90% of your competition. Time and time again we hear from our resume clients about how their job search was transformed once they started using their new resume. It Is Essential That You Create a Twitter Account that Showcases Your Professional Profile Look at your Twitter profile as your online calling card. Make your account information as professional as possible. Briefly introduce yourself, your industry, your passions, your specialties, and your credentials to curious viewers. If you  already have a personal Twitter account that you mainly use with family and friends, dont worry. You wont have to spend a month unfollowing everyone. Instead, you just need to create a new account. Then, youll have two Twitter profiles: one for personal use, and one for professional pursuits. This way, your professional online presence wont  cross paths with your personal one. 2. Start Building Your Network Looking to get your resume into the hands of the hiring manager? Start following CEOs or senior leaders who are relevant to your field and companies that you are interested in working for someday. Pay close attention to the hashtags these accounts use. Once you start following a few key industry leaders, Twitter will provide you with a suggested list of  other people you should follow. Pay attention to this list, because it will be full of people or companies that are followed by the individuals youre following. Understand you are not just collecting followers; you are building professional relationships and strengthening your online reputation and personal brand. 3. Start Retweeting Tweets That You Find Valuable by the Leaders You Follow The more people can  relate to you and your contributions, the more likely they are to continue following you. Tweet tips and share industry-related news and professional resources. Get involved in various conversations about your profession, and by all means, answer questions. Impress future employers and decision makers with your creative insights. 4. Once You Have Built a Base of Followers, Occasionally Tweet About Your Job Search Let your Twitter community know that you are looking for a job. Allow your followers to start working for you. Pay close attention to the number  of characters you use; you want to list only the two or three main skills that apply. Location: You definitely need to state your geographic preference or current location. A recruiter who is reading your tweet will skip over you if they cannot be sure you are in proximity to where the job is â€" or willing to relocate. Make sure to preserve crucial character space by abbreviating the particular state you are in or are seeking to move to. Link to Your Professional Resume: Gotcha! If you have tried the exercise above, you have discovered that 140 characters will not be enough to describe yourself and the value you bring to the table. You will somehow need to provide access to your complete professional resume. You can do this by providing a link to a PDF copy of your resume on Dropbox or Google Drive, or by sharing a link to your LinkedIn profile. While nearly every statistic clearly illustrates that the vast majority of Americans are disengaged at work, a recent study conducted by  Pew Research Center  uncovered an important potential culprit:  nearly a third of Americans (30%) see their work as just a job  rather than a career or even a stepping stone toward a career they’re passionate about.So what’s the difference between just a job and a career? Here are a few of the deciding factors.IncomeAnnual salary carries some weight, according to the same study. Those who earn a household income over $75,000 are  14-20%  more likely to be satisfied with their career than those earning less. Because income usually accompanies a higher level of education, this can also indicate that employees associate higher education with careers and not jobs. In fact, employees are more likely to classify a pos ition requiring a college degree as a career, and again, this directly correlates to their level of engagement and satisfaction at work. Another surprising statistic supports this: 75% of people with a four-year degree or higher are satisfied in their careers compared to just 64% who have less education.PassionThe concept of “The American Dream” has taught US workers that if they become what they dreamed they would be some day they have found their life’s work or their destined career. This is the same sense of hopeful aspiration as the old tradition of little girls dreaming of their wedding day, or young children dreaming of the day they’ll become firefighters, pilots, teachers, doctors or artists. For this reason (and because  passion / sense of purpose and job satisfaction go hand in hand), the difference between a job and a career depends the level of interest one has in their work.
