The Meaning of Work History In Career Applications

The Meaning of Work History In Career Applications The Meaning of Work History In Career Applications Your work history, also known as your work record or employment history, is a detailed report of all the jobs you have held, including the company name, job title, and dates of employment. Here is some insight into when you need to provide your work history and how to provide it, along with tips for building your resume. When You Need to Provide Your Career History When you apply for jobs, companies typically require that applicants provide their work history, either on their resume or on a job application, or both. The job application may ask for information on your most recent jobs, typically two to five positions. Or, the employer may ask for a number of years of experience, typically five to ten years of experience. Employers generally want information on the company you worked for, your job title, and the dates you were employed there. However, sometimes the employer will ask for more detailed employment history and more information on the jobs you have held as  part of the hiring process. For example, he or she might ask for the name and contact information for your previous supervisors. What Employers Are Looking For Employers review employment history to determine whether the jobs the applicant has held and their experience are a good match for the companys requirements. They also look at how long the person has held each job. Many jobs of short duration may imply the candidate is a  job hopper  and wont stay long if hired. Prospective employers also use your work history to verify the information you have provided. Many employers conduct  employment background checks to confirm the information is accurate. Background checks have become increasingly common in all work industries, so make sure that the information you share is accurate. Recreating Your Job History Sometimes, it can be difficult to remember elements of your job history, such as the specific dates that you worked at a company. When this happens, don’t guess. Because background checks are so common, it is likely that an employer will spot a mistake on your history, and it could cost you a job. When you cant remember your work history, there is information available that you can use to recreate your  personal employment history. Below are some suggestions for creating your job history: Contact Prior Employers. Contact the human resources departments of your previous employers. Say that you would like to confirm the exact dates of your employment with the company.Look at Your Tax Returns. Check out your old tax returns and tax forms, which should have information on your employment over previous years.Check with your state unemployment office. Often, unemployment offices will provide individuals with their employment histories. However, they typically only have information on in-state employment histories. Contact the Social Security Administration. You can request earnings information from the Social Security Administration (SSA). After filling out a form, the SSA will usually release information on your work history. Keep in mind that sometimes the SSA charges a fee, depending on how far back you want the information to go, and how much detail you need.Don’t Pay for Information. With the exception of the SSA, you should not pay someone to find your work history or to create a list of your work history for you. Keep Track of Your History. Once you have your work history, compile it into a list and save it somewhere. Be sure to update it regularly. You can then refer to this list any time you apply for jobs. What It Should Look Like on a Resume Job seekers typically include work history in the “Experience” or “Related Employment” section of a resume. In this section, list the companies you worked for, your job titles, and the dates of employment. One additional element to your work history on a resume is a list (often a bulleted list) of your achievements and responsibilities at each job. You do not need to (and should not) include every work experience in your “Experience” section. Focus on jobs, internships, and even volunteer work that is related to the job at hand. One useful tip is to make sure whatever work history you include on your job applications matches what is on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Make sure there are no inconsistencies that could raise a red flag for employers.

How to Get a Job at Google, Part 2

How to Get a Job at Google, Part 2 How to Get a Job at Google, Part 2 Heres part two of the excellent New York Times interview  with Lazlo Block whos in charge of all hiring at Google. (Part one of the article can be found here.). The whole thing is great but I particularly liked Lazlos observations on resumes, as he echoes what we preach. Prospective bosses today care less about what you know or where you learned it than what value you can create with what you know The key is to frame your strengths as: ‘I accomplished X, relative to Y, by doing Z.’ Most people would write a résumé like this: ‘Wrote editorials for The New York Times.’ Better would be to say: ‘Had 50 op-eds published compared to average of 6 by most op-ed [writers] as a result of providing deep insight into the following area for three years.’ Most people don’t put the right content on their résumés.” Google is known for its eccentric hiring practices but, in this, they are no different to any other company. Employers want specifics, because its the details that tell them exactly what youve achieved, and therefore what they can expect in the future. And think about Lazlos words: most people dont put the right content on their resumes. This gives you a HUGE opportunity, because if your resume starts with a powerful summary and contains action-packed and detailed bullet points, youll be head and shoulders above 90% of your competition. Time and time again we hear from our resume clients about how their job search was transformed once they started using their new resume. I also get frequent emails from people who bought my ebook on resume writing. Heres one example, from Anna in San Francisco: It has been over a year since I had an interview. I reworked my resume after buying your book and Im writing to thank you, because Im currently prepping for two interviews! TWO! I think the secret to my success was your advice about getting into specifics I had never done that before but, following your formula, I now have two interviews (Did I mention that I have TWO!?). Thank you so much! The secret is knowing how to demonstrate that you can add what Lazlo calls the value you can create with what you know. If youre interested in more detail, check out our free resume writing course. Youll be amazed at the transformation you can make whether or not you want to work at Google!

5 Ways to Leverage Twitter for Your Job Search

5 Ways to Leverage Twitter for Your Job Search 5 Ways to Leverage Twitter for Your Job Search If you have spent any time  searching for a job in todays market, you should be well aware that paper resumes alone are not enough to cut the mustard. Most of todays employers post their job opportunities online, which means youll need an online presence to land those jobs. To optimize your employment search, you need access to the best online job search tools. When I mention online job search tools, most people think of LinkedIn, a fantastic platform for connecting executives and mid-career job seekers with prospective employers. But theres another tool you should be aware of, one that often goes overlooked and underused: Twitter. I know what you are thinking: Great, I just became comfortable with LinkedIn, and now theres another social media platform I have to join and get used to! Do not fret! The steps offered below will help you to easily integrate Twitter into your employment search. For your convenience, I have broken them down into what I believe to be small, bite-sized points that you will find easily digestible. 1. It Is Essential That You Create a Twitter Account that Showcases Your Professional Profile Look at your Twitter profile as your online calling card. Make your account information as professional as possible. Briefly introduce yourself, your industry, your passions, your specialties, and your credentials to curious viewers. If you  already have a personal Twitter account that you mainly use with family and friends, dont worry. You wont have to spend a month unfollowing everyone. Instead, you just need to create a new account. Then, youll have two Twitter profiles: one for personal use, and one for professional pursuits. This way, your professional online presence wont  cross paths with your personal one. 2. Start Building Your Network Looking to get your resume into the hands of the hiring manager? Start following CEOs or senior leaders who are relevant to your field and companies that you are interested in working for someday. Pay close attention to the hashtags these accounts use. These hashtags will be your link to your target audience and potential employment opportunities. Follow recruiters who specialize in your industry, too. You will find that some companies have Twitter accounts that they use strictly for announcing job openings; you definitely want to follow these. Once you start following a few key industry leaders, Twitter will provide you with a suggested list of  other people you should follow. Pay attention to this list, because it will be full of people or companies that are followed by the individuals youre following. Understand you are not just collecting followers; you are building professional relationships and strengthening your online reputation and personal brand. 3. Start Retweeting Tweets That You Find Valuable by the Leaders You Follow The more people can  relate to you and your contributions, the more likely they are to continue following you. Tweet tips and share industry-related news and professional resources. Get involved in various conversations about your profession, and by all means, answer questions. Impress future employers and decision makers with your creative insights. 4. Once You Have Built a Base of Followers, Occasionally Tweet About Your Job Search Let your Twitter community know that you are looking for a job. Allow your followers to start working for you. Perform a Twitter search for your particular industry under a relevant hashtag, like #HRSpecialist or #JobATL; this will give you a stream of information regarding job availability in your field.  Take advantage of particular job search hashtags that can help you quickly find available opportunities â€" e.g., hashtags such as #NowHiring, #Hiring, #Careers, and #Jobs. 5.  Tweet Your Resume This is the tricky part. How do you compress all of your skills and talents into 140 characters or less? Here are my suggestions on the basics: Job Title: State the job title you currently hold, are seeking, or one used by a potential employer  in a recent job offer. Main Skills: Share your  most relevant set of skills as it relates to the position you are pursuing. Pay close attention to the number  of characters you use; you want to list only the two or three main skills that apply. Location: You definitely need to state your geographic preference or current location. A recruiter who is reading your tweet will skip over you if they cannot be sure you are in proximity to where the job is â€" or willing to relocate. Make sure to preserve crucial character space by abbreviating the particular state you are in or are seeking to move to. Link to Your Professional Resume: Gotcha! If you have tried the exercise above, you have discovered that 140 characters will not be enough to describe yourself and the value you bring to the table. You will somehow need to provide access to your complete professional resume. You can do this by providing a link to a PDF copy of your resume on Dropbox or Google Drive, or by sharing a link to your LinkedIn profile. If you are really bold â€" and technically savvy â€" you can link recruiters to a PowerPoint resume on SlideShare or a video resume on YouTube. To adhere to the 140 character limit, your link needs to be short. I have found that the easiest way to accomplish this is to use a social media management system like  Hootsuite,  which will  automatically shorten your  links. Still need a little help? Check out this article on The Muse, which shows examples of some of the best 140-character resumes on Twitter. - Whew! For all you busy CEOs, executives, and professional job seekers, I know this is an abundance of career information, but trust me: If you are serious about landing that perfect job, you cannot afford to leave any stone unturned. Chances are your competition is probably sticking to friends, family connections, and LinkedIn as their sources for future employment. Those are great starts,  but by integrating Twitter into your job search, you can add a great new tool that will help you gain an edge over other job seekers.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. The difference between having a job vs. having a career

The difference between having a job vs. having a career The difference between having a job vs. having a career Work is an enormous part of the human experience, consuming much of our lives and contributing to one’s sense of worth and identity. While nearly every statistic clearly illustrates that the vast majority of Americans are disengaged at work, a recent study conducted by  Pew Research Center  uncovered an important potential culprit:  nearly a third of Americans (30%) see their work as just a job  rather than a career or even a stepping stone toward a career they’re passionate about. So what’s the difference between just a job and a career? Here are a few of the deciding factors.IncomeAnnual salary carries some weight, according to the same study. Those who earn a household income over $75,000 are  14-20%  more likely to be satisfied with their career than those earning less. Because income usually accompanies a higher level of education, this can also indicate that employees associate higher education with careers and not jobs. In fact, employees are more likely to classify a pos ition requiring a college degree as a career, and again, this directly correlates to their level of engagement and satisfaction at work. Another surprising statistic supports this: 75% of people with a four-year degree or higher are satisfied in their careers compared to just 64% who have less education.PassionThe concept of “The American Dream” has taught US workers that if they become what they dreamed they would be some day they have found their life’s work or their destined career. This is the same sense of hopeful aspiration as the old tradition of little girls dreaming of their wedding day, or young children dreaming of the day they’ll become firefighters, pilots, teachers, doctors or artists. For this reason (and because  passion / sense of purpose and job satisfaction go hand in hand), the difference between a job and a career depends the level of interest one has in their work. Those who get up in the morning and look forward to a new challenge every day might say t hey’ve settled into a career, while those who punch the clock and then painfully endure the next eight to twelve hours might call their work “just a job.”IdentityIdentity can be likened to passion; employees who identify themselves by what they do often classify their work as their career, while those who just do it for a living might call it a job. Interestingly, those who work in the private sector are less likely to identify with their work â€" only  42%  say their work “gives them a sense of identity” compared to 65% of nonprofit workers, 67% of government workers, and 62% of self-employed workers. On a related note, leaders are more likely to consider their work a career than their subordinates working in physical or manual labor. As a matter of fact,  62%  of leaders are satisfied with their career while only 48% of laborers would say the same about their own.Ditching the job for a meaningful careerIf this is you â€" if you feel like you’re just punching the clock t o earn a paycheck and not thriving in the career in which you were meant to be â€" it’s never too late. You can take a few steps today to find more meaningful work and change your outlook in the morning: Ask yourself, “What am I passionate about?” and then explore careers that could help you satisfy that passion. Consider pursuing a degree, certification, or other specialty training to increase your earning power and potential to grow in the company. Review any potential employer’s reviews on an  anonymous employer review platform  before applying or accepting an offer to find out how they deliver on promises of work-life balance, autonomy, meaningful work, community, challenge, and more. Explore opportunities to branch out on your own or join a nonprofit or government entity since these career paths tend to provide more meaning than those with private employers. The most important takeaway? Whether you’re in a career you love or just a job that’s getting you by, you own the future! This post was originally published on Kununu.com.

Giving credit to colleagues makes you look successful

Giving credit to colleagues makes you look successful Giving credit to colleagues makes you look successful We all want our work to be recognized. It’s how we measure our success. But how do you get your colleagues to acknowledge your hard work and toil? Here’s one good tip: by modeling good credit behavior. In other words: If you want people to toot your horn, you need to toot theirs. That way you create a workplace culture where hard work is always acknowledged.Sachin H. Jain, the CEO of the CareMore Health System, said that he learned this from one of his bosses. “I took a few moments to send e-mails to thank individuals who had  helped make  a project of mine successful  and  copied  my boss. My boss,  in  turn, scheduled time with me to thank me for taking the time to recognize others,” he wrote in Harvard Business Review.By recognizing the work of others, Jain got his work recognized too. Bosses like Jain’s know that being a team player is a valued trait that should get praise. Good credit behavior also means doing this in private settings where your boss doesn’t see you. B esides spreading good karma, it shows your colleagues that they work in a place where their ideas matter. That increases team trust and will increase employee morale and retention in the long-run.No one likes working in a job where compliments seem to be conditional on your status, not your accomplishments. Take time to acknowledge your quiet employee’s work. It will make a difference. The New York Times offers similar advice to people who want to share credit: “Create a paper trail. Send out e-mail messages with pertinent sales figures. Circulate memos that recap your team’s stellar performance. Forward select customer accolades to your boss.”Bottom line: people won’t know you and your team did hard work unless you tell them. By forwarding your appreciation of others, you help create a positive feedback loop where your good deeds get acknowledged and theirs do too.

5 ways to hack your budget between jobs

5 ways to hack your budget between jobs 5 ways to hack your budget between jobs Between jobs and struggling to make it by with regular lifestyle choices? Until a hiring manager calls with good news, you need to make a few cuts, but you want to do more than survive.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! You want to thrive! Here are five ways to hack your budget between jobs and save money.1. Cut the Cord and Keep Tube TimeYou may have given up on your New Year’s resolutions by now, but you can cut back on other bills in your life. Start small. Cut the cord altogether, and keep your tube time intact.Consider casting TV shows from your smartphone to the big screen via Google Chrome, Roku or a similar device if you’re the type that just needs noise in the background and loves old shows. Channels such as HBO and NBC have apps available but offer a monthly fee at much less monthly. YouTube lets you stream some content for free, especially if you love cat videos and keeping up with favorite vloggers. You’ve heard of Netflix, which is great, but there are more options to pick and choose from - even combine to get the TV experience you want for less.  You can still access live TV  when you cut the cord, with streaming subscription services such as: Sling  starts at $20 and goes up, depending on the package, and you can customize your package with add-ons for Spanish language channels and sports. Hulu  begins at $40 a month for 55 channels that include varying major networks, such as NBC, FOX and CBS. PlayStation Vue  starter packages offer 45 channels with Access/Access Slim: $40/$30 per month with up to five continuous streams allowed at once. 2. Hack Home and Living ExpensesIdeally,  never let your housing budget exceed 30 percent  of your take-home pay, and for homeowners, that total also counts homeowner’s insurance and property tax. Typical home repairs vary, but it’s wise to budget that in, too, even for renters, who may be responsible for the damage they contribute to or cause. Most don’t live in ideal circumstances. Half of your monthly take-home pay gets put toward the mortgage or rent, especially when between jobs. Try living by the 50/20/30 rule where you still have flexibility but maintain a healthy budget for home and living expenses: Fixed costs  should only consume  50 percent  of income and apply to those fixed costs that remain the same monthly, such as rent and internet. Savings  should comprise  20 percent  of your income. Variable costs  should only use up  30 percent  of your income and include expenses such as groceries, entertainment and clothing. Adjust these percentages based on your circumstances, aiming to work toward the rule for a healthier financial balance. In the meantime, where else can you cut or hack your expenses? Invest in a French press over heading to Starbucks every other day. Cut the gym fees, and use free weights and bike or dance. Rent out a room on Airbnb or look for a roommate. If you have a skill to teach others, put it to use for a reasonable fee.3.  Take Transportation Disparities By the WheelTransportation costs take up a surprisingly large chunk of your monthly budget, especially if you’re a car owner. The good news: this presents you with more savings opportunities. When buying or trading in a car, do your research first. You probably considered the costs of down payment and closing, but there’s more. Do you drive about 15,000 miles a year? The  average total cost of car ownership was $8,469 in 2017  for clocking that mileage, and that doesn’t count the monthly car payment.Every model differs, a s does the added costs of ownership. How much does the gas tank hold in city or on one of your famous road trips? Don’t forget the loan payments, regular maintenance and emergency repair costs. The Meaning of Job Titles in Finance

The Meaning of Job Titles in Finance The Meaning of Job Titles in Finance The financial services industry has unique conventions regarding job titles. Knowing  these will help you evaluate job opportunities and your career progress. Two other closely related topics are  why job titles matter  and what job descriptions mean.   Finance Hierarchy Titles For those pursuing careers in financial management or financial analysis in industries other than financial services, two  points are worth making. First, if you choose to work for a relatively young firm in a field  such as technology, media, or creative services, you may receive a rather quirky or idiosyncratic title that would be meaningless (or, worse yet, seem frivolous) in more traditional firms, should you later want  to change employers. Second, if you join  a very large and  bureaucratic firm, you may be assigned a job title that gives no real hint of your actual responsibilities and thus may confuse a new prospective employer. It is especially so if you hold a relatively unique position. It is possible  that the firm will not create an appropriate title, but instead assign you an existing one that seems close enough. For example, in its final few decades, the vast bulk of the white-collar workforce in  the old Western Electric division of ATT consisted of engineers and computer programmers. The latter received job titles such as information systems staff member (ISSM) or information systems senior staff member (ISSSM). Western Electric also employed a contingent of economists, management scientists  (often called  quants  today), and financial analysts to forecast sales, support budgeting processes,  and analyze competitors. Because their number was relatively small, they were not deemed to  merit a unique set of job titles and thus  were categorized as information systems staff.  It was confusing for hiring managers  in other ATT affiliates, never mind for those outside ATT. The Many Vice Presidents Most noteworthy is the liberal fashion with which financial services firms give employees the rank of vice president. In other industries, this designation is reserved for a handful of the most senior executives. In a financial services firm, vice president generally is an honorific earned by an individual, or an indicator of rank, rather than a descriptive attached to a specific position in the firm. A vice president title often is conferred as a promotion in place, with the recipient retaining ones current job and responsibilities. Because so many management employees eventually become vice presidents, there typically is a hierarchy within this broad category. For example, by the late 1990s Merrill Lynch had this menu of VP job titles for support staff, with the highest at the top: Senior executive VPExecutive VPSenior VPFirst VPDirectorVPAssistant VP Among the above, only the two varieties of executive VP actually attached to specific jobs within the corporation. Director was introduced by Merrill Lynch in the late 1990s as a way to single out certain VPs for special recognition while leaving them in place. By contrast, an upgrade to first VP usually required holding a job at a higher level in the organizational hierarchy. To complicate matters further, first VPs might have directors or ordinary VPs as their peers on the organization chart. Change in Job Title Versus Change in Pay An upgrade in job title may or may not bring an automatic increase in compensation, or in the potential for future increases. Benefits such as vacation time typically increase with such upgrades. The rules vary among employers. Within the universe of producers there normally is an entirely separate hierarchy of vice presidents, with different criteria for admission and different benefits associated with each level. For example, a financial adviser might be elevated to VP-Investments or first VP-Investments based on reaching specific quantifiable criteria related to the size and profitability of the advisers  book of business.
